Class 31s to Brighton
Wessex Trains leases Class 31 locomotives on an ad hoc basis for use on routes via Bristol Temple Meads to the South Coast.
These run in top 'n' tail formation between Mark II coaching stock.
These were employed throughout 2004 on a once-weekly return service between Cardiff Central and Brighton.
The left-hand picture shows 31452 on arrival at Brighton on 5th March 2004 in the livery of owners Fragonset Railways. This photograph depicts locomotive 31454 bringing up the rear at Brighton, in former BR Intercity colours.
 
Class 37 at Eastleigh West London Eurostar
37798 stands sandwiched between two Class 60s at Eastleigh in June 1994, in typical BR grey livery. Eurostar set 373004 makes an unusual sight as it passes south through Kensington Olympia station, en route from North Pole depot with empty stock on 5th August 2004.
 
Eastleigh Shunters
Eastleigh Yard is home to a small number of 08 Shunters, two of which are shown here.
The left-hand picture shows 08776 looking its age whilst hard at work on the morning of 12th June 2004. In this photo 08765 stands idle, though looking very smart in EWS livery.
 
Freightliner Depot Freightliner Class 66
Freightliner's large container operation at Southampton Marine provides a base for many locomotives, among them 57011, seen here with 57010 and shunter 08585 at the company's maintenance facility near Redbridge on 17th June 2004. Freightliner Intermodal locomotive 66535 is seen at Redbridge, near Southampton with a container train on 17th June 2004.
 
GBRf Class 66 SWT Thunderbird
Looking very smart in GB Railfreight livery, 66704 'Colchester Power Signalbox' stands at Eastleigh on 7th August 2004, whilst on loan to EWS. Woking based South West Trains Thunderbird rescue loco 73109 spent 12th June 2004 stabled in Platform 17 at London Waterloo.
 
Fragonset Class 31s
These units are on loan from Derby-based Fragonset Railways (later FM Rail) to Wessex Trains, mostly for use on the Heart of Wessex Line
to Weymouth. They have also seen work on other parts of the Wessex Trains network throughout south west England and south Wales.
Seen stabled at Bristol Temple Meads on 22nd August, together with three of her sister ships, is 31128 of Fragonset Railways. At the other end of the route, 31106 is pictured at the Dorset resort of Weymouth having arrived an hour earlier with a service from Bristol on 28th August 2004.
 
Westbury Class 60 Load Haul Class 60

EWS Class 60 Midland Mainline HST
60042 'The Hundred of Hoo' passes through Gloucester on 25th August 2004 bound for South Wales. 43058 is pictured in the latest livery of Midland Mainline at London St Pancras on 9th October 2004.

one Anglia Class 90 Great Western Class 57
Waiting in platform 10 at London Liverpool Street, 90013 forms the 12.30 intercity service to Norwich on 30th October 2004. First Great Western operate a small fleet of Class 57 Brush locomotives for use on Sleeper services and for thunderbird rescue duties.

On Monday 2nd May 2005 57605 is photographed stabled opposite platform 10 at Reading.
 
GBRf Class 73s
Two of the more unusual visitors seen at Eastleigh on 24th October 2004 were these Class 73 locomotives of GB Railfreight. Both 73s were previously employeed on the Gatwick Express franchise. The far left-hand photo shows 73205 'Jeanette', whilst the near left-hand picture depicts 73209 'Alison'.
 
Ipswich Freighters
A large number of freight locomotives can often be seen stabled adjacent to Platform 4 at Ipswich.
Pictured here are a selection of those present on 1st November 2004.
90041 is photographed in the most recent Freightliner livery. Sister-ship 90042 retains its old Freightliner colour scheme.

One of a dying breed, 47370 looks its age alongside some of its newer stablemates. Another Brush loco, this time 47200, looking smart in Cotswold Rail livery.
 
Freightliner Class 86 SWT Class 73
50kV Class 86 locomotive 86501 is photographed at Ipswich on 2nd November 2004, shortly before its departure for a positioning run. South West Trains' latest Class 73 Thunderbird rescue locomotive has been painted in the company's Outer Suburban livery.

73235 is pictured on 22nd May 2005 at Woking.
 
Gatwick Express Class 73 Network Rail Class 31
Still sporting its Gatwick Express livery, electro-diesel locomotive 73201 is seen stabled at Woking on 22nd May 2005, awaiting a duty with South West Trains. Infrastructure locomotive 31285 of Network Rail is seen running light engine as it heads south through Kensington Olympia station, London on 4th August 2005.
 
NR Test Train
A surprise arrival at Fareham station in Hampshire on the evening of 3rd April 2007 was this Network Rail test train, with top and tail Class 31 locomotives.
The photo to the left depicts 31190 (which also wears D5613), the leading vehicle on arrival at Fareham.
At the opposite end of the rake, 31105 is shown being prepared to lead a return working via Eastleigh to Selhurst.
 
Mainline shunter RES Class 47
Photographed from a passing train, EWS shunter 09019 is pictured at Eastleigh yard on 26th January 2008, still wearing the colours of its former owner, Mainline Freight. Seen stabled at Eastleigh on 26th January 2008, 47791 looks its age in this photograph - still wearing its RES livery, albeit with its name plate removed.
 
First Great Western Class 43 Hanson Class 59
43128 Reading Photographed on 8th February 2008, First Great Western HST power unit 43128 is seen standing in platform 4 at Reading, ready to depart with a westbound service to Swansea. 59101 Reading Hanson freight locomotive 59101 is seen passing through Reading station on 8th February 2008, with a westbound aggregates working.
 
FGW HST Advenza Class 47
43182 Dawlish Warren Seen rounding the curve to join the sea wall section at Dawlish Warren, Devon, on 4th March 2008, First Great Western power car 43182 forms a westbound service to Penzance. 47237 Gloucester Brush locomotive 47237 of recently formed rail haulage firm Advenza Freight is pictured stabled in sidings at Gloucester on 14th June 2008.
 
Grand Central HST NXEC HST
43080 London Kings Cross Photographed at London Kings Cross on 4th October 2008 is HST power car 43080 of new open-access operator Grand Central Rail, seen on its arrival with the 1230 service from Sunderland. 43316 London Kings Cross Pictured shortly after transporting the Webmaster on the 09:50 departure from Edinburgh Waverley, HST power car 43316 of National Express East Coast stands in the platform at London Kings Cross on 4th October 2008.
 
EWS Skip BR Blue Class 73
67024 Hertford North EWS diesel locomotive 67024 is seen stabled at Hertford North on 16th October 2008, possibly for use as a 'thunderbird' recovery vehicle for failed multiple units on the electrified line to North London. 73208 Eastleigh Electrodiesel locomotive 73208 is photographed resting in sidings at Eastleigh, Hampshire on 2nd May 2009.
