Here you can find a selection of photographs taken by the Webmaster during his June/July 2004 Railtour of North West England.

These vary from urban scenes of the large cities to the idyllic beauty of the National Parks.

WIGAN PIER
The iron rails in the foreground of the left-hand photo mark the site of the original Wigan Pier, where coal from local mines was loaded onto barges on the Liverpool Leeds Canal.

The photo to the right depicts theOrwell public house and restaurant, housed in a former cotton warehouse adjacent
to Wigan Pier.

PRESTON PARISH CHURCH
Preston Parish Church is located in the centre of the Lancastrian city - its tall spire being a prominent landmark on the skyline.

LANCASTER CASTLE
Lancaster Castle dominates the scene as passengers arrive at the city's railway station.

Set on high ground, adjacent to Lancaster Priory, the majority of the castle is still used as a gaol, although some parts are open to the public.

CUMBRIAN COAST
These photos were taken along the Cumbrian Coast line from Carnforth
to Carlisle.

The left-hand photo shows the view north east from Kent Viaduct, whilst the right-hand picture looks south towards St Bees Head from Harrington on the Irish Sea Coast.

SCENES ON THE SETTLE TO CARLISLE RAILWAY
These photographs were taken from the train during the journey from Carlisle to Settle.

TOP LEFT: The view eastwards, south of Kirkby Stephen.
TOP CENTRE: Mallerstang Edge.
TOP RIGHT: Ribblehead Station.
BOTTOM RIGHT: The view southeast towards Pen-y-ghent.
BOTTOM LEFT: Horton-in-Ribblesdale Station.

CITY OF SALFORD
The City of Salford is most famous as the setting for UK television's
long-running soap opera Coronation Street. However, the reality is very different to the scenes depicted on film, as shown in these photos, taken on the banks over the River Orwell, adjacent to the Lowry Hotel. Both Salford and its sister city of Manchester are presently undergoing much rejuvenation, worthy of any world-class city.

CITY OF MANCHESTER
The remodernization of Manchester city centre has been ongoing for some years now, which has resulted in the construction of some very striking buildings. However, situated in the heart of all the redevelopment stands the Old Wellington public house, which was literally picked up and moved a few years ago to prevent its demolition.

These pictures were taken aboard a Virgin Pendolino service as it headed south through Cumbria towards Oxenholme.
The photo to the left shows the Howgill Fells, with the River Lune in the foreground.
The right-hand picture depicts the disused Lowgill Viaduct, formerly part of the Little North Western Railway.

DUMFRIES
Old Bridge, Dumfries is pictured here as it crosses the River Nith, with the weir in the foreground.

BOLTON
Bolton town centre is dominated by its ornate Town Hall.

This building is one of a similar pair designed and built during the 19th Century.

Its sister structure can be found in the south coast city of Portsmouth.

SOUTHPORT
The Merseyside resort town of Southport is full of interesting Victorian architecture, including the Arts Centre on Lord Street, shown here.

CITY OF LIVERPOOL
Seen here are a selection of photographs taken along Liverpool's
famous waterfront, due to become a World Heritage Site.
