CITY OF YORK
York Minster is the largest Gothic church in Britain and attracts visitors from all over the world
The ancient lane known as The Shambles can be found in the heart of the city and is mentioned in the Domesday Book
Cliffords Tower stands on the south side of the city and is the largest structure remaining of York's former castle
Skeldergate Bridge is seen from the eastern bank of the River Ouse. Beyond is Bishop's Wharf, home to the Webmaster for the duration of the week
This photo shows the stretch of York's city walls above Nunnery Lane
The Minster is seen here from the City Walls, above Station Road
       
SCARBOROUGH
The picturesque North Yorkshire town of Scarborough is home to a bustling fishing port, an imposing castle and a broad sandy beach
This is the view north from the harbour towards the quayside and Scarborough Castle atop the cliffs
This is the scene southeast towards the harbour wall and the North Sea beyond
This photo was taken close to the funicular cliff railway and looks north east across the beach to the harbour beyond
This is the scene across the bay, as the waves break on Scarborough's sandy beach
       
HARROGATE
Left: Harrogate's Old Pump House is seen here from the entrance to the town's attractive gardens.

Right: Harrogate's attractive Victorian architecture looks elegant in the winter sunshine.
       
WHITBY
LEFT: The famous fishing port of Whitby is seen here from the quayside, with a glimpse of the ruined Abbey high on the cliffs.

RIGHT: St Mary's Church stands on the headland, at the top of the town's 199 Steps that lead up from Church Street.
       
WHITBY ABBEY
Whitby's magnificent ruined Abbey is one of the UK's most photogenic buildings.
Here are a small selection from the dozens of pictures taken by the Webmaster during his visit.
The Abbey is seen in the sunshine from the north west
The Abbey takes on an almost sinister appearence when photographed in silhouette

APPLEBY-IN-WESTMORLAND
These typical Cumbrian cottages can be found at the top of the main street,
close to Appleby Castle

RIBBLEHEAD
The snow-capped heights of Whernside dominate the scene above the Station Inn at Ribblehead, with the famous viaduct looming large behind
The deserted Ribblehead station looks idyllic on a winter's morning
The bunk house of the Station Inn is shown from the lane leading to Ribblehead Station
The classic view of Ribblehead Viaduct as it crosses Batty Moss, with Whernside forming the backdrop
A similar picture of the viaduct, this time with a Freightliner Heavy Haul Class 67 locomotive heading north with a train of hoppers

THE SETTLE TO CARLISLE LINE IN WINTER
In contrast to other photos of the Settle to Carlisle line which appear on this site, these photos depict the surroundings during late winter
Dentdale is seen here from the train, with the snowy peak of Great Coum to the south west
The rural landscape around Mallerstang Edge is seen here from the train
Along with Whernside and Ingleborough, Pen-y-Ghent completes the Yorkshire Dales National Park's famous Three Peaks. This picture was taken north of Horton-in-Ribblesdale station
The rural nature of the Settle to Carlisle line is quite apparent in this photo
       
KINGSTON-UPON-HULL
Left: Lightship Spurn is permanently moored at Hull Marina.

Right: Holy Trinity Church is seen reflected in the windows of a modern office block on Market Place.
     
BEVERLEY MINSTER
The small market town of Beverley in the East Riding of Yorkshire is home to a magnificent Gothic Minster
FAR LEFT & FAR RIGHT: These photos depict the view of the West Front towers, from different directions.
CENTRE LEFT & CENTRE RIGHT:These two pictures illustrate the intricate stone carvings of the West Front.
       
CITY OF RIPON
Left: Kirkgate is typical of the small streets that form the centre of historic Ripon. Part of the Cathedral can be seen at the end of the street.

Right: This is the view from the banks of the River Ure, towards Ripon Cathedral.

BRIDLINGTON

The fishing port and summer resort of Bridlington stands on the North Sea coast in the East Riding of Yorkshire.

These pictures are typical of the scenes around the town's small harbour.
       
THE ROYAL BORDER BRIDGE

Robert Stephenson's magnificent Royal Border Bridge takes the East Coast Main Line over the River Tweed at Berwick in Northumberland

The photograph to the left shows a Virgin Trains Super Voyager set crossing the viaduct as it heads toward the Scottish border, four miles to the north.

The right-hand photo shows two arches of the bridge in close-up, with a weather vane and a cottage framed within each span.
       
BERWICK-UPON-TWEED
The Royal Tweed New Bridge is seen here, with an EWS locomotive crossing the Royal Border Bridge in the background.
The 17th Century Old Bridge is pictured from the water's edge on Bridge Terrace
This view looks east along Pier Road, towards the harbour wall and the lighthouse
The lighthouse stands at the eastern extremity of the harbour wall
The River Tweed is seen beyond Shore Gate and the Elizabethan town ramparts at the end of Ness Street
This view looks north west toward Bridge Terrace, on the banks of the River Tweed
       
NEWCASTLE-UPON-TYNE
Whenever in the North East of England, the Webmaster cannot resist the temptation of a visit to the wonderful city of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, where some of Britain's greatest engineering feats can be found
Gateshead Millennium Bridge is seen spanning the River Tyne beyond the northern approach viaduct to the Tyne Bridge
The swing bridge is pictured here from the vantage point atop Castle Garth
Norman Foster's striking Sage Centre is seen beyond the magnificent superstructure of the Tyne Bridge
Five of the bridges spanning the River Tyne are seen here in silhouette
       
CITY OF DURHAM
England's most imposing man-made spectacle can be found high above the River Wear in the ancient city of Durham.

LEFT: The awe-inspiring spectacle of Durham's huge cathedral is seen here after dark, as viewed from the Cathedral Green.

RIGHT: Durham Castle is seen floodlit from the banks of the River Wear.
